Father Thomas Ryan came to Hong Kong as a Jesuit in 1933.

During the 1930s he carried out his religious duties, taught at Wah Yan College, and was active in projects of social reform and betterment. In 1934 he helped found a social service club among students of the Jesuits and in 1938 he joined with Anglican Archbishop Ronald Hall to set up the Hong Kong Housing Society. He also worked with Archbishop Hall on the Hong Kong Emergency Refugee Council which tried to help the tens of thousands of refugees who fled to Hong Kong after the Japanese attack on south China in late 1938.

In the summer of 1941 he was appointed the Jesuit Regional Superior. As an Irish citizen he was not interned by the Japanese. During the occupation he lived first at the French Hospital, later at Wah Yan College.

He was arrested in May, 1943 and held until August. The charge is not known.

I'm looking for photos / sketches / portraits of him for the CPS project's history book. A Barrister, he was appointed as second Police Magistrate (the position previously called "Assistant Magistrate") in 1862. He left Hong Kong in 1870 [1], but I'm not sure if he carried on as Police Magistrate that long, as E W Goodlake was appointed as Second Police Magistrate in 1867.

Ok, the 1867 end-date is confirmed:

William CAINE [1799-1871]

Dates of birth & death given by Christopher Munn in the Dictionary of Hong Kong Biography.

He was Hong Kong's first Chief Magistrate. He founded Hong Kong's Police force, and had several other important roles in Hong Kong's government between 1841 and his retirement (and departure from Hong Kong) in 1859.

I'm looking for an image of him to include in the JCCPS project. Has anyone seen one? Photos may not be available, so sketches / engravings / cartoons / paintings are also welcome.
