Mr Howell Green has kindly shared his memories (and photos) of this time with us. He writes:
I was posted to the water transport division of the RASC (Royal Army Service Corps), acting as deck crew and/or helmsman on launches, small trawlers (otherwise known as general service launches) and landing craft. A soldier, my trade was “seaman”, my army number was T/22726147, and rank was private.
I have had, for years, a collection of the letters I sent home to my parents during this time. They contained a great deal of dross! So I have picked out anything of interest, week by week, and added here and there some more information that the letters missed. This transcript was written in 2009/2010.
I've split up Howell's story and photos by month - click one of the links below to start reading.

RASC Hong Kong 1953-54
I have been trying to find out more about my parents and came across this article. According to their marriage certificate my father was CPL David Harry Bendall of 56 Coy RASC based in Sham Shui Po when he met and married a chinese lady from Valley Road, Hong Kong. His witnesses may have been colleagues - Robert Wilfred Cockell and Arthur William Ash. They married 18 April 1954 and left Hong Kong for England, where I was born in February 1955. A second certificate from Singapore is dated 10 August 1954. I would like to try to find out more about my father's time in Hong Kong and more about his marriage witnesses

ann - did you have siblings called marlene and ruby?
if so, the rev. sidebotham from christchurch waterloo road may be able to help you as he fostered them in the 70s - they were students at dgs

Dear Ann,
I asked Howell if he recognised any of the names, but unfortunately not. If you haven't tried it already, there's also an online discussion forum for the Royal Army Service Corps and Royal Corps of Transport Association that would be worth a visit. Click here for details.
