Book news #1 ... 5,000th copy of a Gwulo book sold!
Since the last New on Gwulo roundup, we've passed 5,000 copies sold. Looking at the records, that 5,000th book was a copy of Volume 4 bought by a friend, Julline. Thanks Julline, I hope your new colleague enjoys the photos and their stories.
Book news #2 ... a new book from Gwulo
We've just published a new, and very different book. It's nothing to do with old photos or even Hong Kong's history, but please bear with me as I have a moment's parental pride for my daughter's new children's book.
The story: Silvia, a young dolphin, is swimming happily with her mother when their peace is shattered by deafening noises. Fishermen are driving the dolphins into shallow water to capture them. Silvia is pulled from her mother and sold to an aquarium where she has to perform for visitors.
Will Silvia ever see her mother again?
After the story’s bittersweet ending, readers learn about dolphins’ special abilities, and about the cetaceans (dolphins and porpoises) that are local to Hong Kong’s waters.
The author & illustrator, Sarah Bellis: Born and raised in Hong Kong, Sarah has recently completed sixth form at Kellett School. She studied Art and Biology A-levels, combining those skills with her interests in conservation to create The Lonely Dolphin.
Sarah hopes that after reading her book, children and their parents will think twice about visiting dolphin shows. This is one step towards the goal of ending the captivity of these intelligent creatures.
Sarah will go on to study for a BSc in Conservation Biology and Ecology at Exeter University.
Availability: The book is written for children aged 6-10 years old. Copies are available in local bookstores Bleak House Books and Bookazine, and also from Amazon UK.
We now resume our regularly scheduled programming ...
