Cecil Sylvester Ward was a Baptist pastor. Served in Hong Kong with his wife, Margaret from 1940 until repatriation in 1942. They had a son, James Theron Ward who was born on the Asama Maru on 15 July 1942.

Rev Cecil Ward was appointed to serve in Canton in 1940, along with his wife Margaret. The Southern Baptist Commission Magazine of June 1941 gives House #20 Cheung Chau as his address at that time so they must have been doing their two years of language study at the Language School on Cheung Chau. As well as language learning, Rev Ward was helping in Sunday School work in Hong Kong churches and teaching a New Testament course in the Pooi In Bible School, which by this time had been moved from Canton to Hong Kong.
Because they were on the island, they were interned following the Japanese invasion of Hong Kong in December 1941.
