In 1940, Margaret/Gertrude Ward was appointed with her husband Rev. Cecil Wardto serve in Canton. Their first two years were spent on Cheung Chau, where the Southern Baptist Commission Magazine (June 1941) lists their address as House #20. This indicates that they were engaged in the standard two‑year course of language study at the Cheung Chau Language School. During this period, Margaret/ Gertrude will also have assisted with Sunday School work in Hong Kong churches and possibly done some teaching along with her husband at the Pooi In Bible School, which was founded in Canton but by now was in Hong Kong.
Because they were living on the island at the time of the Japanese invasion in December 1941, the Wards were among those captured and interned when Hong Kong fell.
