The Peak, 1950’s (taken by Jack Bottomley)

I believe my Grandfather took this photo sometime in the 1950's. He was an architect with the PWD and lived at Peak Pavilions at the time.

Hi Robbot27,

My apologies if you already know this, but the tower block in the middle is Peak Pavilions Government Quarters - where your Grandfather lived.

Gwulo contributor Guy Shirra previously informed us that the same photo (with slight cropping on the right side) appeared in a book in 1952. Here's a copy of the page.

Perhaps your Grandfather took "official" photos of PWD works and the book publishers obtained one for use in their book?

Oh wow this is the exact same photo! I assumed my grandfather took the original photo, but I suppose someone else could have taken it and given him a copy. I wonder what book it was in? My paternal grandparents left Hong Kong in 1956. I thought that was Peak Pavilions in the photo, but thank you for the confirmation. They also lived at the Homestead pre-War, and when my father was born in 1932 at the Victoria Hospital in Barker Road, they were living at 406 The Peak (aka "The Sailing Look", now 6 Lloyd Path).

The main photo also appears in the January/February 1949 issue of the Hong Kong and Far East Builder. See: https://digitalrepository.lib.hku.hk/catalog/5425r804w#?c=&m=&s=&cv=16&xywh=-240%2C163%2C2352%2C1649 and other photos of the Peak Pavilions.

The photograph appears to have been taken in early 1949 upon completion of the quarters. Likely to meet the deadline for the publication.
