Create Events Page

Hi David

What do you think of the idea about creating an events template for pages like the Po Hing Fong landslide [1925-1925], as a pPace doesn't really fit for the landslide. How I see it working would be:

-It would use the area outline rather than have a specific marker. (If a marker is required a different colour could be utilized)

-A specific date would be needed (unsure how to deal with multi-day events)

-Places involved in the event could be listed on the page.

-People involved in the event could also be listed

For example an event page could be created for the American Air raid on Stanley.

date of the raid

It would include an approximate area of the bomb damage

The buildings affected by the raid with a link to their individual places

The people killed/injured/otherwise associated with the raid

The idea is to link the many separate pages of information about specific events into one main area

Other examples of events would be fires, major celebrations, battles, riots. I am not sure if weddings/birthdays would be notable enough to include unless major

As more events were added it would also be possible to create something like Wikipedia's 'on this day' feature for the newsletter here. It could include building openings, births and deaths of Hong Kong residents. (On this week may work better)

Thoughts?

I've thought for some time that an Event page will be a useful addition, so thanks for the input. Here's a simple page to record an event: https://gwulo.com/node/add/event

Hopefully readers will pick a theme or two and make some event pages, and we'll see how they can be used.

I'd say a Place is better for a landslide though. A landslide needs an area, it fits into a timeline of buildings, and it has photos that show it, ie all features that Places have. But a rainstorm would be an ideal case for an Event, and could show a map of landslides associated with it.

Regards, David

I've added two new types of page to Gwulo:

  1. Event
  2. Timeline

An Event is a page for ... an event, and a Timeline shows a group of related events on a ... you get the idea.

As a demo I've made several Event pages about typhoons, and a Timeline page for them at https://gwulo.com/node/38134

Please try them out and let me know if anything isn't working well or is difficult / confusing to use.

Then I'd like volunteers to try creating their own timelines. If you can let me know your timeline and 5-20 events you'd add to it, I'll help you get started.

Events don't have any information about location or outline at this point. I can see times that'll be useful, so if the basic version gets used I'll add the location support after the summer.

My main motivation for suggesting things like landslides don't use place is the Map is really creaking under all the places, it often completely freezes the page when I use it.

I think it would also help if you updated the first page directory to include this and other changes you have made to the site, at the moment   noone knows where to find the Create Event page so it wont get used. I recall you also created a map where it was possible to filter places by date but I cant find the page.

Please add any more information you have about the creaky maps problem to https://gwulo.com/node/38220

The Directory will be updated with links to Timelines & Events, but first I'd like to see some more Timelines made, and also have some feedback from users to iron out any problems before it is made public.

Here's the map filtered by date: https://gwulo.com/places-by-years-completed

Thanks, working Now. I am unsure what the Timeline Box is for. I have created a couple of events and they appeared on the timeline here  even though I didn't put anything in the box. The Coronation is also there which probably have its own celebrations timeline.

Is there a place I can see the different timelines that have been created?

For the text box description can we remove the 'Notes' at the beginning as it is unnecessary and is it possible to add a spacwe between the end of the text box and the date

Thanks for creating these. Answers to your points:

  1. I am unsure what the Timeline Box is for.

    1. "Photo to show on Timeline" lets you specify a photo that appears when the event is shown on the timeline. eg look at https://gwulo.com/node/38134 and each event shows a photo in the large window below the timeline.
    2. "... appears on Timeline:" is where you connect an Event to one or more Timelines.
  2. I have created a couple of events and they appeared on the timeline here  even though I didn't put anything in the box. The Coronation is also there which probably have its own celebrations timeline.
    1. That was a bug. It's fixed now, so a Timeline only shows Events that are connected to it as described in 2.2 above.
  3. Is there a place I can see the different timelines that have been created?
    1. For temporary lists see https://gwulo.com/tracker/recent-posts-by-type?type%5B%5D=event and https://gwulo.com/tracker/recent-posts-by-type?type%5B%5D=timeline
    2. You can make a new timeline at https://gwulo.com/node/add/timeline
  4. For the text box description can we remove the 'Notes' at the beginning as it is unnecessary
    1. Done
  5. and is it possible to add a spacwe between the end of the text box and the date
    1. The problem of the end of the text appearing so close to the date is a side effect of pasting text that has lots of formatting (I guess you may be copying text from Word?). Here's one with lots of formatting that makes the text/date too close: https://gwulo.com/node/38802 and here's one where I've removed all the extra formatting, so the normal spacing works: https://gwulo.com/node/38801
I've just written some tips on how to paste plain text without formatting: https://gwulo.com/node/38806

I hope that helps, but let me know if anything isn't clear, or you find any other problems.
