To me it looks like a roller driven by a diesel engine rather than steam. Compare to the one from 1900:

Hi Claus.  I think you are right, it is driven by a diesel engine.   The term "steam roller" is still heard today from casual conversations.  I have not heard people saying "diesel roller" when in fact it is diesel-driven.

Then when I was young, I learned why they called them "steam" roller; when the asphalt was compacted down, I saw steam rising from the surface.  Regards,  Peter
