Line-of-Gaps / Kennedy Town PB 4 / LPB 19, Kennedy Town [c.1941-????]

Submitted by Rob on Sun, 05/29/2022 - 11:57

HKBU's The Battle of Hong Kong 1941: A Spatial History Project recently rediscovered a long forgotten HK Island PB, and added it to their map as LPB 19 (see https://digital.lib.hkbu.edu.hk/1941hkbattle/en/map.php and tick 'HK I Pillboxes' under 'Structures').

For this page on Gwulo I've adjusted the position of the marker slightly, moving it to an adjacent open space, based on the PB's probable construction date and a post-war aerial photograph. That area is now Exit B1 of the HK Uni MTR Station.

Pillbox 314 Entrance Tunnel [c.1937- ]

The tunnel entrance to Pillbox 314. The concrete sides are intact but the brick archway has collapsed in 3 places. "314" is still clearly visible in red. The easiest way to access seems to be to follow the small catchwater northwest and then go up the slope a bit. There are small overgrown paths around the entrance and some trees have markings on them directing you towards the entrance.

Mystery fort and mini tunnel [????- ]

Submitted by H Lo on Wed, 03/17/2021 - 12:23

The marker is for the fort/pillbox, whereas the mini tunnel is just below it.

It's composed of a mini tunnel, a part of wall which we often seen at pillboxes, then comes two thick walls that look like it's been built above a boulder at one end, and some bricks on the other end.

Not sure to whom do these ruins belong to, although the mini tunnel looks a bit like the one at PB411.

There are some indents on one of the thick walls, with a wide patterned band along the top of the two walls, I haven't seen this type of design before.

Help to save Pillbox 16 & 17!

Please take a moment to consider signing this petition to save some Hong Kong WWII history.

The link below is to a petition addressed to the LCSD to save Pillbox 16 & 17 near and on Repulse Bay. My reasons for choosing these two pillboxes specifically is because they are in areas where there are a lot of tourists, and are easily accessible for a large number of people, so it makes sense for the LCSD to invest a small amount of money into them to keep them alive as educational pieces for the Hong Kong public.
