Anna d'Almeida née Hait was the chuild of White Russian parents. At some point before 1925 they moved to Shanghai and in that year Anna sailed to Seattle, apparently intending to live permanently in the USA. She applied for American citizenship in 1926 after what seems to have been a statutory one year's residence, but in 1928 she was back in Shanghai, where she married Carlos Eugenio d'Almeida at the Portuguese Consulate.
Before the war Mr. d'Almeida was the manager of the United Sales Association, whose activities included importing furs. During the Japanese occupation, like a number of others, he became a broker, matching buyers and sellers in a disrupted economy.
He is pictured standing on the far right of the front row in the Edgar wedding photo (https://gwulo.com/atom/14720).
He married Anna Hait in Shanghai in 1928. The couple were divorced at some point before 1948.
His Naturalisation Certificate, dated 10 May 1947, is held in the UK National Archives, their ref: HO 334/256/3891. It has the following information:
James Hunter was my great uncle ( brother of my GF Tobias Hunter.) He lived at 11 Shelley Street and worked for S J David in 1917-1918. In 1919 he worked for my GF as a commision agent ( from HK Jurors List ). His wife Emma ( maiden name unknown) died in 1933 at 11 Shelley Street and his daughter Ellen Hunter( born 1899 ) alias Fok Shuk Wah, died also at 11 Shelley Street in 1944. She does not appear to have been interned at Stanley Camp which could be due to her Eurasian status ( maybe looked more Asian ).
James Mackenzie Jack inherited the engineering company W.C. Jack & Co. Ltd. from his father, William Jack, on his death in 1919. He was serving in Salonika with his brother at the time of his father's death. I don't know his brother's name, or if he returned safely to Hong Kong. When my uncle, Leslie Warren, had to wind up C.E. Warren & Co. in May, 1941, James Jack asked him to take over the Jacks branch in Penang while the then MD took six months leave. Jack became a POW and was in the fifth transportation to Japan, where he died in a POW camp on 15 September 1944.
