I have written up my HK war experiences to several sites and made a report to the HK War Crimes project because Col Tokunaga, came to our house uninvited while my father was a POW and chose our house for his residence. We managed to sail to Shanghai in the hold of a freighter. I was 10 years old when Japan attacked and 14 when the was was over.

Betty STEEL [1910-c.1997]
My grandmother was moved to Hong Kong from Wei Hai Wei when she was five, due to her father being appointed to the victualling Store Office in Kowloon. Sadly her father died in 1917, and is now burried in Happy Valley cemetery. With her mother and sister Audrey they continued to live in Hong Kong in a number of places: Kowloon, North Point and Happy Valley being the main ones.

Gladys was the daughter of Tom Hutchinson, sister of Beatrice, and appears in Tom's war diary as Girlie.

Married to William Leyland Hunter who was born in Manchester, UK 1844. Three children, George, Tobias, and May.
