China Mail 14 November 1946

The HK & Kowloon Wharf Co. Ltd first post war general meeting mentioned that the Company's Manager and Secretary, Mr. C. M. Manners died in Stanley on 21 November 1944.

Thanks Moddsey, I've added in the date. He's mentioned in the 1941 jurors list, and had the same middle name as his surname:

Charles Manners, manager of the HK & Kowloon Wharf and Godown Company is mentioned in The Yip Family of Amah Rock by Jill Doggett. 

In 1940 he had helped missionary Mildred Dibden move into her Babies' Home in Fanling with her charges from Cheung Chau, and overseen the construction of several dozen bespoke wooden cots. From time to time he provided the home with sacks of rice and tea.

In The Fall of Hong Kong by Tim Carew, Major Manners was one of the civilian captives taken by the Japanese at the Repulse Bay Hotel in December 1941.

After his capture, he and Andrew Shields were sent by the Japanese on Christmas morning under a white flag to General Maltby and thence to Governor Sir Mark Young to sue for peace. The Governor though followed his Prime Minister's direction and used his Christmas Day message to say 'Fight on!', only to reverse his decision later that day.

As is said above, Major Manners was interned in Stanley Camp and later died there in November 1944, aged just 62.
