re: Mr. Eldred Drummond Bush
Thank you for identifying your family members. I had a look in the lists we have of internees at Stanley Camp, and can't see the Bush family mentioned. Please do you know where they were living before boarding the MS Gripsholm?
Regards, David
Re: List of People: Stanley - Hong Kong Repatriates
Brian Edgar has written a very good article “Condemned to be Free:” The Dilemmas of Canadian Civilians in Japanese-Occupied Hong Kong. See: https://scholars.wlu.ca/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2076&context=cmh
Although the list in handwriting says "Canadians Only", the list of people shown also included U.S. nationals and individuals that had claimed U.S. citizenship through family, marriage etc.. The list also included individuals that were not interned in Stanley Camp.
With reference to Eldred Drummond Bush (1888-1965), he was the grandson of Frederick T. Bush (1815-1887, U.S. Consul in Hong Kong. His father, Frederick Deblois Bush (1843-1907), served as the US Vice-Consul in Hankou and the assistant of the American-owned Russell & Co. in Hong Kong. A crosslink to Eldred Bush via his brother, James Daniel Bush on facebook (set to Google Translate) showing the latter's family and business connections.
