I think Treverbyn is still there, mainly hidden but with just its roof rising above the Hotel Annex.

The progress of construction of Homestead Government Quarters and Stubbs Road can help to date this photo.

Firstly, Homestead Government Quarters. Two handwritten “X’s” have been added above them on the photo. The Quarters consisted of;

  • an apartment block, below and to the right of the left “X”. The roof is on and there’s no sign of scaffolding, but it seems dark compared to the neighbouring houses. Later photos show it was painted in a light colour, suggesting it was nearing completion but hadn’t been finished when this photo was taken.
  • four detached houses, three of which can be seen to the right of the apartment block. They appear to have been completed.
  • one semi-detached house, seen below the right “X”. It’s under construction, covered in scaffolding and built up to about the first-floor level.

The annual PWD Reports recorded the progress of construction in some detail.

1922. By year end 2 houses were roofed and the other 2 were nearing roofing, whilst the block of flats had reached 2/F level. Additionally, a contract was signed for a semi-detached pair of houses and site prep started on this before year end. (Para. 86, 1922 PWD Report)

1923. Three houses completed in July, another in September and the block of flats towards the end of November. The pair of semi-detached houses… were well advanced by the end of December, the roof having been laid. (Para.94, 1923 PWD Report).

Comparing these facts with the photo, I’d say it was taken in 1923.

Now to Stubbs Road. The photo shows its edges and junction with Aberdeen Reservoir Road are both incomplete. Again the PWD Reports provide helpful information and tell us that construction started in 1921 and by the end of 1923, “the road was so far advanced, that a small length of retaining wall only and some filling in near Treverbyn, remained to be done.” Again the description suggests the photo was taken in 1923.

The uncompleted junction of Stubbs and Aberdeen Reservoir Roads is also seen in this pic.

 The state of progress of construction of the junction is similar in both photos, meaning that this one was also taken at around the same time.
