Follow-up: The Jinricksha Company which we mentioned some time ago was to be formed has now been started and thirty of the vehicles were taken to the Registrar-General's office to be licensed yesterday. Hong Kong Daily Press 23 April 1880 refers.

Taken on the Praya, today's Des Voeux Road Central.
The sloping wall at the left of the photo is the old City Hall, completed in 1869. The building next to it is Wardley House, demolished around 1882.
Rickshaws arrived in Hong Kong in 1874 (see reference).
I'll guess a date of 1880 for this photo, but corrections are very welcome.
