A discrepancy. Would this…
A discrepancy. Would this photo not be much earlier than 1908?
Compare with this photo of the same place from 1905 - look at the growth and height of the trees and the constructed wall on the east side of Macdonnell (Canton) Road:
c 1890s
Thank you David for checking. There is obviously an error in the Wikipedia dates.
The photo came from the publication "From Timeball to Atomic Clock - A History of the Royal Observatory". It is referred there: The time ball near the Marine Police Station, Tsim Sha Tsui, first used in January 1885. The time ball was moved to Blackhead's Point in January 1908. The uploader obviously mistook the 1908 movement with the date of the photo.
Taking into account the buildings and freshly planted trees (as you pointed out), the photo is from the (early) 1890s. Would you agree?
Yes, agree. Nice to know…
Yes, agree. Nice to know when the Chinese Godowns to the left of the photo were built (suspect earlier than 1885) and also when the wall was put up on the east side of Macdonnell Road to help narrow dates.
