Hi There,

There is actually some Chinese charactesr atop the gateway on the upper left, but they are too small and blurred read.  Maybe the big building with the twin towers could provide some thought.  On the other hand, we have Stonecutters and Tsing Yi in the background. Maybe we can use that together with th ebuildings to triangulate the approximate location.

For girls schools there are at least three I could think of in the Mid Levels that has long history:

1.   Sacred Heart;

2.   Ying Wah

3.   Saint Stephen's

Maybe someone could identify the uniforms?

Dear T,

I have compared the photo with others taken in the same area, the one shared by Moddsey under the subject "1930s Caine Road" in particular. I believe the gateway you mentioned was at Upper Station Street and the location of the basket ball court is now occupied by Central and Western District Saint Anthony's School at 2, Hosiptal Road.

Regards,

David

I had a discussion with the Author of "Illustrating Hong Kong Historical Buildings" in facebbok group about this pictoure. According to Dr. Wong, the basketball court was used as a public court after the relocation of Police Station No. 8.

Different school have occupied this site 2, Hospital Road: Yu To Sang Memorial Primary School, Yu To Sang Memorial Secondary School, Institute of Language in Education, and now C & W St Anthony School

Just found out that the building was Ellis Kadoorie School For Boys located at 26-28 Hospital Road. Building built in 1896 and rebuilt in three stages: 1906(west), 1910 (east) and 1913 (middle). Demolished in September 1964.

I think the same basketball court and its gateway also appeared here in this link - https://gwulo.com/atom/19872 (another contribution from Moddsey). If so, as the gateway shown therein was very probably connected to the Upper Station Street, this could be a good reference for identifying its exact location.

Regards,

David

Thanks David.

Having compared the 1941 photo with this photo on Facebook dated to 1958, I agree with the location of the basketball court being at 2 Hospital Road. The large building to the west of the basketball court can be viewed on the extreme left of the 1958 photo. A place has been made here for the basketball court.
