Thanks David! Connie Hawkett was the first wife of my maternal grandfather James Henry Hawkett. She passed away in HK in 1957. My grandfather then married my grandmother Lui Hawkett.
Connie Hawkett was a friend of Mabel Redwood, Barbara Anslow's mother. They were both Auxiliary Nurses at the temporary hospital in Happy Valley during the fighting in 1941. When the Japanese soldiers overran this area, they raped several of the younger nurses.
She is mentioned more often in Mabel's memoir, It Was Like This. The section of the memoir which talks about Mabel's experiences at the temporary hospital has also been reprinted in Barbara's recent book, Tin Hats and Rice.
I was researching information on my maternal grandfather, James Henry Hawkett and it lead me to this page. That means we are cousins, Vanessa. I am a bit late to these comments, but hope it finds you well and wish you the best.
