Notes on Stanley Camp discussion list:
'My name is Charles Crawford (formerly Rozeskwy). I was interned in Stanley Camp with my parents Charles and Carlotta and my older sister Lucy.
I was 14 years old when I entered the Camp and during the period of my internment I was taught by Professor Lancelot Forster. Classes took place in St Stephen's College where, together with the other two students in my group, we sat on the stage in the hall. My fellow students were Yvonne Blackmore and Billy Dudman.
Under the Professor we studied English grammar and literature. I do not recall that we had any grammar text books, the only teaching aides were a blackboard and chalk. Shakespeare was the Professor's main interest and he taught us from a single copy of the works of Shakespeare. The method of teaching was to have us memorise and then enact the plays. The Professor was strict in his insistence that we knew our lessons and did our homework. His methods must have been effective because to this day I can still recite large chunks of Richard II, the Professor's favourite work, and, in particular, a speech from the opening scene of that play.
By the end of our time in the Camp, all three of us had been taught to a standard sufficient to enable the Professor to present each of us with a letter (matriculation standard) to enable us to enter any British university on our return to the UK. All three of us took advantage of this opportunity.
Other teachers whom I remember in the Camp include: Professor Sewell who taught us science, Miss Cunningham who taught us maths, Miss Elizabeth Gibbins who taught us history and Professor Robertson who taught us, I think, geography and French.
I should be interested to hear from Lady Anne Badenoch what became of her father, whom I remember fondly and with admiration to this day, after the liberation.'
