William Gawan Sewell born July 6, 1898 in Whitby, Yorkshire. Died January 13, 1984.

Quaker missionary and lecturer in Chemistry in China before the war. Interned in  Stanley (author of the memoir 'Strange Harmony', 1946). After the war represented the University of Ghana in London until retirement in 1964.
