Barbara Anslow writes:
At one period in Stanley I used to 'go to school' in St Stephens to attend Prof Forster's English lessons on Shakespeare. I (in my twenties) must have looked very out of place among the Stanley children, but felt grateful that the Head Mistress, Miss Gibbins, allowed me to do this.
The different classes sat in separate groups dotted around the hall. There were only about 6 or 7 in Prof. Forster's class, mainly boys. I didn't know Prof. Forster personally, but found his teaching awesome.

Professor Lancelot Forster
Extract from a Memorial speech by L T Ride, 1968
"... Professor Forster’s war work previous to the outbreak of hostilities in Hong Kong was with the Department of Information of which he was Director from 1939 until our surrender in 1941. Then came what history must surely look upon as Professor Forster’s biggest contribution to education in Hong Kong, his founding and chairmanship of the Education Committee in Stanley Internment Camp. Within a few weeks of three thousand members of all sections of Hong Kong’s community being herded into the meagre interment accommodation in the vicinity of the neck of the Stanley Peninsula, this Committee had organized schooling for the hundreds of children confined there. They were thus able to carry on their education without interruption throughout the occupation of Hong Kong and many of these, now adults in various parts of the world, owe their present position to the educational facilities afforded them in Stanley by the public spirited service of Professor Forster and his small band of teachers. In the hearts and minds of these people and of all his students his work will live on. ..."
