Dent & Co. and Lindsay & Co.

Mon, 09/22/2014 - 22:22

Building A was Dent & Co., that I'm sure, but how about Building B & C? Did they belong to Dent & Co. as well?

I was told Lindsay & Co. was next to Dent & co.? Did Building D & E belong to Lindsay, building style look exactly the same.

If I'm wrong, what were building B, C, D & E

We could trace the ownership by lot number. See http://gwulo.com/node/8229.

For ML 2,

1871 LEASE OF PREMISES FOR 4 YEARS FROM 1/1/1871 JOHN SMITH AND ALEXANDER F. SMITH TRADING AS MCEWEN & COMPANY
-
1882 LEASE FOR 10 YEARS FROM 1ST JANUARY 1882 RE SEC.A THE CHARTERED MERCANTILE BANK OF INDIA, LONDON AND CHINA

I don't have my copy of Mapping Hong Kong available, but I think it has a labelled map showing Dent's property running the length of Pedder Street, but only the width of building A.

For ML2, I believe that covers the south portion facing Queen's Rd. The section on the sea side was split into lots 2a, 2b, and 2c, and two of those should be buildings D and E.

Lovely photo!

We see the dome of the Hong Kong Hotel, so this is after Dent's went under and their original ML 3&4 on Queen's Road was sold to the Hong Kong Hotel.   We are looking at reclaimed ML 7 &  ML 2A and ML 2B (now IL 1730)

Lindsay only owned ML 2A. He sold it to Solomon David Sassoon in 1867.

You can add these to "places"

Powell Building, 12 Des Voeux Road Central
ML 2B - IL 1730 - Current Bank Of East Asia

Compare to this photo from 1887.
