I think that strange building next to HSBC is the rather sad leftover of the old City Hall

As the old City Hall was demolished in 1936, the photo was taken in 1937. I can see what appears to be crowns on the roof of the HSBC and the letter 'G' on the left side of the building to celebrate the coronation of King George VI in May 1937.

As for the building next to the HSBC and directly in front of the demolished City Hall in the Flickr photo, it was known as the City Hall Annexe.

I was wondering what a G was doing there - thanks for the explanation.
