Lewis Bush, a Japanese-speaking Volunteer Naval Officer, leaves Camp for Shamshuipo after repeated protests that, as a uniformed Volunteer, he is in the wrong camp:

Lieut. Bush sent in from Stanley, Alan Barwell very fit. But there is some friction there with the families, only to be expected.

Bush's own account:

Went to church with J.F. at 4 o'clock I also went to the morning service for a wee while but owing to rations I usually have to leave before the sermon.

On Monday we received a whole egg for our meat ration didn't we live high and that for two meals. Fortunately we had a tin of sausages which tided us over the midday meal, rice and vegetables are not much use by themselves.

Well I have had a busy week. We had a special meeting of the B.C.C. at 9.30 on Wed and then we all went up in a body to see Maiyima, the representative of the Jap Foreign Office. He was coldly polite and told us we had no right to anything more than all the other inhabitants of H.K. have. They recognise a duty to feed prisoners of war but not civilian internees. As Newbigging said to him - then all we have to do is to die of slow starvation.

Another month nearly gone. We have heard that quite definitely we are to be repatriated soon – I wonder! I used eagerly to swallow all these delicious rumours but nowadays I have either grown cynical or have found that to over indulge in wishful thinking is merely to bruise one’s tender shoots of blind hope and bring upon oneself a feeling of depression and frustration. On the other hand, of course, the more cautious of these rumours certainly do help to stimulate you and keep you going in this benighted place – how we all detest it!

Cookhouse.

Plenty good news around if true. Repatriation jambed [jammed?] in London? Invasion fleet ready at home. Bizarts [?]captured, Germans evacuating via Gabes [?] & their barges etc being bombed. Smolensk by-passed by Russians. Indians giving Japs trouble locally.

Walk with Steve pm.

Dull & rainy.

Tyler – “London Policeman looks back”.

((There were two policemen surnamed Tyler in Stanley Camp. The title of the talk suggests an older man, so I guess it was Leonard Tyler (b.1899), rather than Harry Tyler (b.1917) ))

Mr. Hatori (successor to Oda) visited Camp.

Adored.  Another month started and still nothing even approaching definiteness. You are never out of my thoughts but I can't write much. I think they'll get us out of here but when D.O.K. - I make a joke that I'll dance with you on our Silver Wedding - and have promised Dora to crack a bottle in the Caley Restaurant! - but we are all weary of waiting. Chow is still shocking - mere starvation diet - we got our last of the Red Cross stuff yesterday - 4 tins of bully each and 1/2 a small 8oz tin.

Drizzly & dull.
