Union Church (4th & current generation) [1949- ]

Submitted by David on

Built on the site of the previous Union Church, which was demolished during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong.

The Church website gives the completion dates of the current buildings:

The church building 'disappeared' during World War 2 and has been rebuilt over time, with the Fellowship Hall in 1949, the Sanctuary in 1955 and the Annex in 1970.

The original site of the Nethersole Dispensary is located inside Blake Garden, near the exit to Upper Station Street. It occupied the ground floor of the Taipingshan Chapel of the London Missionary Society at 2 Station Street (now Po Yee Street).

Opened in 1961:

Bishop Lorenzo Bianchi celebrated the consecration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Tai Po on 11.6.1961.  Rev. Narciso Santinon of PIME was appointed the first rector.  To pay tribute to the Holy Mother, the church was thus named as the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Prison tower / St. Barbara's Church, Stonecutter's Island [????- ]

Submitted by David on

I think I've got the right location, based on the GeoInfo map, but let me know if it needs moving.

It's the last remnant of the short-lived prison that was built on Stonecutters Island in the 19th Century.

At some later date it became the Garrison church. I wonder what it is used for now?

There's a good photo from 1996 on Flickr. Sharing is restricted for this photo, but here is the link: https://www.flickr.com/photos/89154377@N02/9572513857/in/set-72157634364767445

St. Stephen's Chapel, Stanley [1950- ]

Submitted by David on

The church website says:

The Chapel itself was built after the war. The Foundation Stone was laid by Bishop R.O Hall on 10th December 1949 and the Chapel was consecrated on 4th March 1950. During the consecration, Bishop Hall dedicated the Chapel to those who died in the war and those who suffered here during the internment. We remember them on Remembrance Sunday in November every year.

As well as being the School Chapel, since 1977 it has also been home to the present English speaking congregation as a daughter church of St. John’s Cathedral

Pioneer Memorial Church of Seventh-day Adventists (1st generation) [1939-c.2019]

Henry Ching remembers going to school here in 1939:

Wrt brianwindsoredgar’s post on the American missionary Charles Winter and the references therein to the schools run by the Seventh Day Adventist, the SDA also ran a small school in their Church in Ventris Road, Happy Valley.  I was a “pupil” there, beginning I think in 1939 when I was six years old and until December 1941.
