Grand Theatre (first generation)/香港大戲院 [1923-1956]

Submitted by Klaus on Wed, 08/09/2017 - 03:22

Grand Theatre was located at 183 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai (current Hopewell Centre)

It opened on 4 June 1923. It's predecessor on the same site was the Eastern Theatre which opened in the 1910s and closed probably in 1922.  (See all comments below).

According to Cinema Treasures, the building existed from the 1910s till 1956 until the second generation theatre was built on the same site. It looks as if the existence of the Eastern Theatre was included in this time span.

The first purpose built theatre in HK, Tung Hing theatre, was built on the corner of market Street (today named Po-Hing Fong) and Grace street (today called Po Yan Street) This theatre opened in 1867, and was later renamed Chung Hing Yuen. The theatre closed in early 1910. The Duke of Edinburgh visited in 1869 to see a Chinese Opera performance put on in his honour by the local Chinese community.

Tngan writes:

The AC Hall (大專會堂) was a popular venue for Rock/Jazz Concerts back then.  I had had my share of concerts there in the 1980's.  It was in the campus of the Baptist College then.  It is still there but the college had been upgraded to a full University for some time now.

Cliff Atkins adds:

Yes, this was the main venue for rock and pop concerts in the early 1980s prior to the opening of the Colisseum in Hung Hom.

Herostratus writes:

The site of the new extension of the Tung Wah Hospital was previously the Pok Lok theatre, owned by Ying Kit of Nam Pak Hong. The theatre was destroyed in a fire on 02-02-1886, according to the China mail:

This afternoon a serious conflagration took place in the Pok Lok Chinese theatre in Hollywood Road, resulting in the complete destruction of the interior of the building and probably necessitating the pulling down of the greater portion if not the whole of the walls, and unfortunately, attended by loss of life.
