Submitted by rachel12 on

Dear Gwulo users,

My name is Rachel and I'm a part-time MSc Library and Information Management student at University of Hong Kong. I'm currently working on my Capstone Project which examines user participation in online community archives, using Gwulo as a reference point.

Delivering a one-ton load to the 25th floor - made possible by the RAF's 28 Squadron

Submitted by JerkJi on

In April 1972, Gordon Andreassend was sitting in his office in Murray Building when Hal Empson, the Cartographer strode in. “We’ve got a problem with the process camera” he said.

“Everything’s arrived, hasn’t it, what’s the problem?” was Gordon’s reply.

It appeared there seemed no way to get the solid metal base of the camera, weighing about one ton, and 20 foot in length, into its allocated space on top of the building. It was too big for any lift, and too heavy to manhandle up the stairs to the 25th floor.

Chinese escaping to mainland China in 1942

My mother, 6 month old sister and grandmother moved to Mongkok in 1939 from Toishan. They fled back to their village in Jan 1942 shortly after the British surrender of the Battle of Hong Kong. Does anyone have any knowledge of what it would have been like, first hand or otherwise, to undertake this escape?

Are there staff lists in W.T. Featherstone's DBS Register?

Apologies for duplicating this enquiry which I added to an existing DBS thread a week ago and have just corrected. It eluded David’s weekly summary last week and perhaps got buried, but now appears below this post. In the HK Daily Press article uploaded to Gwulo which describes the expedition of DBS boys through the Golden Hill Tunnel in 1926, https://gwulo.com/comment/58391#comment-58391 I was startled to see the name of my father, C.R. Warren given as one of the three masters who led the group.
