Could someone supply biographical information on Quan Kai who was a wealthy business man in Canton and Hong Kong in the early 1900s? He was born about 1854.

He was the owner of Kwong Hee Ying at No. 264, Des Voeux Road Central in 1907 and comprador for several firms and agent for the Portland Flouring Company and several other businesses.

Deutscher Klub

Submitted by danielwettling on

Hi,

I learned, that in 1927 there was a German Tennis Club in Kowloon (Deutscher Tennis Klub) and in 1931 there was another German Club (Deutscher Klub) at Butterfield and Swire Building 4th. Floor.

Did Hong Kong had two (2) German Clubs (Deutscher Klub) at that time ? And how about the Club Germania which was established long time ago with the first Generation Building on Wyndham Street ?

Would appreciate, if somebody can help me out with my questions

Thank you very much

Daniel

Pottinger Map and Gordon Map

Submitted by danielwettling on

Dear Colleagues,

I found two layouts of maps. One from 1842 which is named (the Pottinger Map), and the other map from 1843 is named (the Gordon Map)

I tried to search who this Mr. Gordon was. I could not find a surname of this person. Who was Mr. Gordon ?

Any information regarding Mr. Gordon is very much appreciated

Thank you and kind regards,

Daniel

Central magistracy

Submitted by danielwettling on

Dear Colleagues,

Can somebody explain to me when the first central magistracy was built.

I have learned from a map, dated 1845, that the central magistracy was not standing on the same location as it is standing know. The present building was built in 1913. But from another map (from 1857) the magistracy was already on the place as it is today.

Would it be possible, that there was a second magistracy built perhaps already (one year later) in 1846 ?

Thank you very much for your kind help

Best regards,

Daniel

The Twelve Apostles and The Forty Thieves

Submitted by Christine Thomas on

My current project is researching the lives of  “The Twelve Apostles” and “The Forty Thieves” – i.e. the two groups of Royal Marines recruited to the Hong Kong Police in 1899 and 1900 respectively.  Anyone interested in the stories will find them on my Hong Kong Police Ancestors Blog:  http://hongkongpoliceancestors.blogspot.co.uk/
