Pictures of the Hong Kong Judiciary

Submitted by Christopher Munn on Fri, 03/03/2017 - 12:23

Over the past few years I have been taking part in a project on the history of the Hong Kong Judiciary from 1841 to the present, which we hope will result in the publication of a book in the next year or so. Now that the documentary research is nearly complete, we are looking for historical photographs and other images to use as illustrations.

A brief history of the Court Houses of Hongkong might be given here. We find in the old chronicles that building of a Court House on the site of the present Masonic Hall in Zetland Street was commenced in 1841 It was not until three years later (a matter for complaint at the time) that a Supreme Court was opened in premises in Wellington Street on October 1, 1844, the event being accompanied by the customary pomp and ceremony.

Magistracy (first generation), then Debtor's Prison [????-1856]

Position is approximate.

Its role as the Magistracy was replaced by a new Magistracy building to the northeast, which opened some time in 1845-46.

This older building wasn't demolished, but underwent some conversion work. It is shown on later maps marked "Debtor's Prison".
