Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, Number 2 Battery [1941-1941]

Submitted by h9430500 on

Number 2 Battery of the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps (HKVDC) was created in 1941.

Key Historical Details

  • Improvised Battery: Built in response to the escalating threat of Japanese invasion, it was classified as one of Hong Kong's "improvised batteries" along with Aberdeen and Cape D'Aguilar.
  • Location: The unit was permanently stationed at Bluff Head 黃麻角炮台 on the southern tip of the Stanley Peninsula. Construction of the battery infrastructure required the colonial government to resume local land and relocate village families in the late 1930s.
  • Armament: It was equipped with two 6-inch coastal defense guns taken from the World War I cruiser HMS Kent.
  • Mobilization: The battery was officially mobilized for combat on December 7, 1941, just hours before the outbreak of the Battle of Hong Kong. They actively engaged Japanese forces until the colony's surrender on Black Christmas, December 25, 1941.
