Alice Elizabeth Manning was better known as Sister Santa Maria. She served the Maryknoll Sisters and was assigned to Hong Kong in 1931. From 1932 to 1937, she taught at Holy Sprit School and thereafter at Maryknoll Convent School in Kowloon Tong.
After the fall of Hong Kong, she was residing at Maryknoll Convent School. On 8 February 1942, eighteen Sisters of the school including Sister Santa Maria were interned at Stanley Camp.
She was released from camp in June 1942 and repatriated to the United States.
At the end of 1946, Sister Santa Maria returned to Hong Kong to continue teaching at Maryknoll Convent School. She died in 1982 and is buried at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Happy Valley.
