Born in 1915, David Trench was educated at Tonbridge School in Kent and graduated with an MA from Jesus College, Cambridge.
He married Margaret Gould and they had a daughter, Katherine.
From 1939-45 he fought in the Second World War. He was awarded an MC for his service in the British Solomon Islands, and eventually attained the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1947.
As mentioned above, he served as Deputy Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong between 1959 and 1960. He left Hong Kong to take up the office of High Commissioner for the British Western Pacific Territories between 1961 and 1964, but returned to Hong Kong as Governor between 1964 and 1971.
He inherited a prosperous city from his predecessor, along with numerous social issues - water shortages, refugees from mainland China and a rise in corruption. After major riots in 1966 and 1967, he introduced social reforms, including an eight-hour working day, six-day working week and six-year compulsory primary school education.
