H.M. JUSTICES OF THE PEACE.
ANNUAL SESSION
The annual session of H. M. Justices of the Peace was held this afternoon in the Small Court at the Magistracy, Mr H. H. J. Gompertz, Acting Police Magistrate, presided. The Justices present were Hon. R. D. Ormsby, Dr F. Clark, Messrs A. G. Morris, A. Shelton Hooper, C. W. Duggan, D. R. Crawford, F. J, Badeley, A. Findlay Smith, Rev. R. F. Cobbold, and W. M. B. Arthur.
The following applications were granted:—
- Alexander Moir, The Peak Hotel—Applicant has held a license for about eleven years.
- J. C. Goodchild, Thomas’ Grill Room, No. 2 Queen's Road Central—Applicant has held a licence for two years.
- Joachim Gomes, The International Hotel, Nos. 318 and 320 Queen's Road Central— Applicant for has held a licence for 31 years.
- Heinrich Varrolmann, The Western Hotel, Nos. 90 and 92 Queen's Road West —Applicant has held a licence for 9 months.
- Hans Jertrum, The German Tavern, Nos. 266 and 268 Queen's Road Central— Applicant has held a licence for two years.
- Henry James Faunch, The Praya East Hotel, Nos. 38 and 39 Praya East—Applicant has held a licence for nine months.
- James W. Osborne, The Kowloon Hotel, Elgin Road, Kowloon—Applicant has held a licence for nine years.
- Henry Oliver, The Travellers' Hotel, Nos. 12 and 13 Queen Victoria Street— Applicant has held a licence over four years.
- Frederick Melhuish, the Criterion Hotel, Nos. 21 and 23 Pottinger Street—Applicant has held a licence over four years.
- Catherine Alice Dremner, The Waverley Hotel, No. 6 Ice House Street (adjunct licence)—Applicant has held a licence for four months.
- Ismail Pillay Madar, the New Victoria Hotel, No. 9 Queen's Road Central—Applicant has held a licence for eleven years.
- Harry Haynes, The Hongkong Hotel.
- Joseph H. Donnenburg, The Colonial Hotel, No. 4 Jubilee Street—Applicant has held a licence for about seven years.
- Isaac Samuel Grienstein, The Central Hotel, Nos, 242 and 244 Queen's Road Central—Applicant has held a licence for five months.
- Isydor Silberman, The Globe Hotel, No. 184 Queen's Road Central—Applicant has held a licence for six years.
- Moritz Freimann, The Land We Live In, Nos. 332 and 334 Queen’s Road Central— Applicant has held the licence over one year.
- Wilhelm Krater, The Rose, Shamrock and Thistle Hotel, Nos. 288 and 290 Queen's Road Central— Applicant has held a licence for about five years.
- Nowrosjee B. Moola, The Hunghom Hotel, No. 30 Bulkeley Street, Hunghom —Applicant never held a license before.
- S. J. Granville, The Metropole Hotel, No. 2 Shaukiwan Road—Applicant has never held a licence before.
- Arthur Henry Harper, The Bay View Hotel, No. 20 Shaukiwan Road—Applicant has held a licence for one year of the ‘ Sportsman's Arms' now 'Central Hotel'.
- Anthony Milroy, The Sailors' Home, No. 187 a Praya West—Applicant has never held a licence before.
THE EASTERN HOTEL.
Mr Deacon applied on behalf of Bernard Jorus for a publican’s licence for the premises Nos 192 and 194 Queen’s Road East, to be known as 'The Eastern Hotel.' He said the premises were on the North side of Queen's Road, and about one hundred yards from the Wanchai Market. They consisted of two houses, semi-detached. On one side of them there was a lane and on the other aide a thoroughfare. They were therefore separated from any other house, and the nearest public house was the Praya East Hotel. Except for that public house and the Seamen's Club there was no public house near. The applicant was a native of Holland. He served some time in the American navy and afterwards in the Imperial Maritime Customs, and was for some time an overseer of works in this Colony.
The application was considered in private and granted.
THE HAPPY RETREAT.
An application by Peter Hayes for a publican’s licence for 'The Happy Retreat,’ Wongneichung Valley, was refused.
CONNAUGHT HOUSE.
An application by Antonio Fonseca for a publican's licence for Connaught House, No. 13 Queen’s Road Central, was refused.
THE STAG HOTEL.
Rustomjee Cowasjee Bamjee applied for a publican's licence for the Stag Hotel, Nos. 148 and 150 Queen’s Road Central.
There were Police objections to granting the application.
Mr Hursthouse addressing the Justices on behalf of the applicant said the proprietor had been quite unable to justify the allegation of the former manager against two women employed at the hotel. At the same time should the Justices be in possession of information regarding them which the proprietor did not know, and which would in any way justify him in acting, the proprietor would be quite willing to act upon such information.
The application was refused.
