A Greek lady, Eugenie Antipas, born about 1902, jumped from the Butterfield & Swire cargo ship Yunnan in August 1954, about a day out of Shanghai en route to Hong Kong. My father, Kenneth Page, who was the Chief Officer, rescued her using the ship's lifeboat, which Captain Frank Kelly had lowered. He said she was not very grateful and tried to resist his attempts at artificial respiration. She was taken to the Mental Hospital shortly after the arrival of the Yunnan at the Custodian Wharf. Another report said that she was accompanied by her sister, Miss A G Antipas. The latter, when asked about the incident, said her sister was living alone in Shanghai during the Japanese occupation there. She was always inclined to be nervous and was supported by her brother. So the family were really Shanghai Greeks, but perhaps there was a Hong Kong connection.
