This photo of the early aircraft carrier HMS Argus is from the 1926-1928 album of William Richmond Fell. In 1928 he was patrolling the China Station between Hong Kong and Weihaiwei with the 4th Submarine Flotilla. One of Argus's nicknames was "Flat Iron." There is a substantial Wikipedia entry on her that confirms her visit to the China Station in 1928.

Re: Photo
Not in Mirs Bay but anchored in the harbour in the man-of-war anchorage. I think I can make out the KCR terminus on the extreme right.

Thanks for the correction, moddsey. Would the nice sandy beach, where the crew are enjoying some down time, be in Mirs Bay, do you think?
Re: Argus in Mirs Bay
The second photo shows the officers on a sandy beach. No identifiable features to say that it is not in Mirs Bay.
Re: Main Photo
Rummaging through, I have a copy of the main photo. Likely it was taken by the Navy. A similar photo postcard of the Argus in the same position but with planes overhead appears on this website: http://www.the-weatherings.co.uk/pccship0315.htm

Well found, moddsey! And especially well remembered. The legend of "Mirs" must therefore refer to the location of the group on the beach. Thank you for taking the time to solve this.
