Kai Tak aerodrome-northern extension-1935

The rarely acknowledged1935 northern extension of Kai Tak Airport.

The extensive area of low-lying fields (after which “Field Cottage” was probably named??) sat approximately 10 feet below the airport’s operational level after its reclamation from the  Bay. The newly designated area had to be filled to raise it to meet the airport’s datum level.

Meanwhile, the SAI KUNG ROAD alignment moved north to circumnavigate the airport’s new perimeter. The “Field Cottage” compound appears in the corner of this diagram above the government’s ink stamp/‘Chop’.

Field Cottage was demolished at this time as it would have caused a hazard for arriving & departing large aircraft/airliner’s flight paths. Imperial Airways was about to start scheduled services in March 1936. C.N.A.C., Air France & Eurasia followed.

As an aside, the diagram’s field shape details and boundary areas, buildings and CLP electricity infrastructure on the photocopied print is remarkable.
