David requested photos of swimwear a while back. I don't think I have uploaded this one of Cicely Warren before. I think the photo was taken on Stanley beach. I did upload photos of Cicely's children in knitted swimsuits, possibly on the same beach. I asked then about the white building in the background, that I believe is the same one as appears in the distance here. It was identified by gw as South Cliff. Here is the photo of the children that I think would have been taken a few years later than the one of their mother above, perhaps around 1936 or 1937.

Woolen swimsuits
The Scottish comedian Billy Connolly covered this subject very well in a BBC episode.

I remember them from my postwar childhood on the East Coast of Scotland, where our parents would kit you out in a baggy woolen swimsuit/trunks (no shoulder straps) and encourage you to run into the freezing North Sea.
Whereupon, the water was instantly absorbed into your woolen garment like a sponge. Adding so much weight, you could be dragged under the waves, or the swimsuit slid down to your ankles, too much embarrassment for the wearer.
