Photo from the book "Photographs", held at the Getty Museum.
The caption reads:
"HONGKONG. / No. 310, -- Public Gardens. / Another view of the Gardens seen from the upper terrace of South side, on the right is a large Pine Trees, these trees often grow of the height of 150 feet."
The photographer's name is given as William Saunders, the estimated date being 1880-1890.
This is incorrect. On the right behind the Government House is HMS Princess Charlotte (in Hong Kong from 1858 to 1875); on the left is HMS Meanee (in Hong Kong from 1867 to 1906). Therefore, the date of the photo lies between 1867 and 1874 (in this year HMS Victor Emmanuel arrived). My estimate would be early 1870s.
