Chinese painting of ships in the Hong Kong harbour c.1865.
Amongst others, four hulks can be seen. Taking into account that this is no photo but an artist's impression, I'm trying to identify the four hulks (A-D). Assuming that 1865 is correct +/- 2 years, the hulks present were:
HMS Alligator |
ex 28 |
1848-1865 |
seamen's hospital |
HMS Hercules |
ex 74 |
1853-1865 |
army depot |
HMS Melville |
ex 74 |
1857-1873 |
hospital ship |
HMS Princess Charlotte |
ex 110 |
1858-1875 |
barracks |
The largest hulk is B, therefore it should be HMS Princess Charlotte.
The smallest hulk is D, therefore it should be HMS Alligator.
The two remaining ships are of the same class, and therefore not easily distinguishable. From a photo of HMS Melville, it seem that the ship has a straight downward stern - as C has.
So my guess is A for HMS Hercules, and C for HMS Melville.
