1865 - Zetland Hall

This extremely early image of Zetland Hall, then situated on the corner of Zetland Street and Ice House Street, appears in: Waller, Peter, Lost Hong Kong. A History in Pictures, Blacksmith Books, Hong Kong 2019.

The accompanying text reads: “Zetland Hall. Recorded shortly after its completion in 1865 by photographer William Pryor Floyd (1834-1900)”.

This 1865 photographic image is so surprisingly sharp and detailed that it is possible to make out the Chinese characters situated over the entranceway. Read in the traditional manner, from right to left, they are in modern usage: 雍仁會館 – Yung Yan Wooi Gwoon.

(Submitted in memory of Bro. Paul Alderton D.S.C., a Hong Kong Mason throughout the 1950’s and 1960’s.)
