One of the authors Mr Shum Chi Min (岑智明) bought a photo album in an auction market which contains this photo. The album recorded the aftermath in Hong Kong of a typhoon on Aug 18, 1923. Its object of interest was an old temple on the west side of the Kowloon City Road. In the 1920s, the Kowloon City Road (九龍城道) was broadened and later renamed Ma Tau Wai road (southern section) and Ma Tau Chung Road (northern section). The temple in question:
Further out in the districts towards Kowloon City, Hung Hom and Sham Shui Po, motor buses had been caught by the elements and overturned on their sides, some of them badly smashed. One of those on the Kowloon City Road had been lifted right off the road and hurled into a paddy field. Hong Kong Daily Press 20 August 1923 refers.
(The originator of the photo is "Mee Cheung", the photographic studio, and can be viewed in the Hong Kong Telegraph dated 22 August 1923 with caption "Motor bus blown over in Kowloon". The above snippet appears to refer to the scene in the main photo.)

The top photo is the right way round. I have seen the photo before. I recall its from the 1920s showing an overturned bus. Road to Kowloon City?

Kowloon City Road
Revisited the main photo. I think one is looking at Kowloon City Road. Up ahead on the left behind the nearest electricity pole is the S. K. H. Holy Trinity Church (2nd location) [1905-1936] on the hill.
