I don't know if this angle with my mum Sheila Staple aged about four or five in 1933/34, helps to place where the house was on Suffolk Road. It had a lawn in front as seen in other pics
The photo above looks like the same view as this photo, but a few years later after the plants have grown:
With Lion Rock in the background we should be looking north. The house on the right is set back from this one. That could narrow it down, looking at which houses are set forward or back on the map:
with Lion Rock so close at the back, I think think this house must have been at the Waterloo Rd end of Suffolk Road. Perhaps #2 or #3? However, when you compare it to the original picture posted below (link: http://gwulo.com/atom/24469) it is a different house.
The fact that the people seem to be standing in a garden on the south side of the road seems to confirm the other house was elsewhere. There was, until recently, a very similar house at #4 Dorset Crescent, only recently demolished. Perhaps they were visiting friends on one of the other (two-sided) roads - Somerset Rd or Dorset Crescent for example?
Edit: having just walked around there, the proximity of Lion Rock is obvious from either end of the road, so i am no longer certain the Suffolk Rd house should necessarily be at the Waterloo Rd end.
A bit of a wild guess really, but using the 1956 map of Kowloon Tong, could the Staple family's house be the one fourth from the (northern) corner of Suffolk and Waterloo Roads? Just looking at the apparent wall behind the house (to the left of it), the positions of the neighbouring houses etc, it seems about right. I do not know the lot numbers/house numbering though, as the map doesn't seem to show that.
thanks - had to be somewhere today but will get back on this - pure guesswork from me too but when I googled street view I thought I glimpsed a similar bit of building hidden behind modern street facade - thanks for your kind comments about adding the people and places - I have a fair few more!
Using the Centadata website (for the first time yesterday, I am new to it too), the house fourth from the right would be, quite logically I suppose (given there were no houses on the southern side), 4 Suffolk Rd. The family home in your photos appears to be sitting right back in the top right corner of the block.
