Today's dragon boat races include mixed-race and mixed-sex teams. But I wonder when the first foreigner took part, or the first woman? Certainly no sign of them in this photo.
We can see the Chinese Permanent Cemetery at Aberdeen in the background. That puts the photographer on Aberdeen Harbour, roughly level with today's Aberdeen Centre, or the Aberdeen Dockyard as it was then.
The junks in the background appear to be flying large, dark-coloured banners. Look closely though, and you'll see they're actually the junks' fishing nets, hanging up to dry.
