Sorry to trouble you! Was having another look at the post that I made some time ago confirming my personal details and those of my son Tim (who is still serving in the HKP). Decided to make a few minor additions but .....in the process of so doing I seem to have lost the whole thing. My question, is it missing pending approval of the amendment by your good self ....or has it gone forever and will therefore require a complete redraft on my part?

Regards,

Dick Worrall

Hi Dick,

Sorry for that - as you guessed it had got stuck waiting for approval. You can now edit it (and any other of your material) without needing any approval: http://gwulo.com/comment/30788#comment-30788

On a related note I've just posted a photo of children taken in Stanley Camp. If you can recognise anyone, please could you leave a comment there? http://gwulo.com/node/34044

Finally, you were mentioned a few days ago in the "72 years ago" diaries. A belated happy birthday!

Regards, David

Hi David , Just been reading Stepehens comments and I need to contact him about another ship flag mystry that is unrelated to China, is that possible please.

Hi David.

My grandparents were living on Plantation road for seveal years around 1910. I have some old photos and letters from that period. I just wonder how welcome this old information it is for habitants of the city today. I have understood that this was a period of great poverty for the native population and great wealth for a few europeans on their behalf. Maybe people really hate every reminder of the sad time of colonialism? Should I back off and let bygones be bygones?

Johan

Hi Johan,

Gwulo's readers will enjoy learning more about your grandparents and their time in Hong Kong. Please go ahead and share what you know, and let us know if you have any questions we can help with.

A good start would be to create pages for your family members who lived in Hong Kong: https://gwulo.com/node/add/person

Here's how to upload a photo: https://gwulo.com/node/2076

Regards, David

Thank you for bringing my attention to the typo in my Cheung Chau comment David.  I've now posted the revised copy.

In a day or so I will be getting the final PDF proofs of Asia Betrayed: How Churchill Sacrificed The Far East To Save England..  I wonder if you'd care to have a look at it?

Thanks again,  John.

Read the sample: the few photos brought back too many memories of a time long past.  Good effort by you and those that assisted in the publication.

Just ordered 2 copies.  Could you be so kind to sign both copies.

The book will be used to provide substantiation to my proposed documentary on Hong Kong which I am preparing.  Proposed to visit and film the 'battle areas' in late May 2018.

May need a guide to show me around as HK has gone through a tremendous change which I am presuming has affected the areas intended to visit.

Perhaps Ms Annemarie Evans RTHK or you may be around?

Should you respond to my request, could you do so to my email address.

Best for now.  Keep safe, in good health and enjoy life around you.

Tony

David, I have several photos I wish to upload, but I have never understood what are "tags" so I leave that blank.  Do you want tags? if so please tell me what sort of wording is appropriate.

Thanks and regards,

Gordon

If you have the text, or can convert the scan to text, that's the best option. Then simply paste the text into a Forum post: https://gwulo.com/node/add/forum/2

If you can't get the text then:

 - If it's a short document, say 10 pages or less, please upload them as photos

 - if it's a longer document in PDF format, please send it to me by email and I'll add it to the site.

Regards, David

Sorry, David, I am obviously not familiar with the inner workings of your site, so need to trouble you further.

I have two documents of three pages each (as photos).  When I uploaded them the pages appeared in a random order, which is no good for the reader (I deleted the upload).  How to ensure they stay in order when uploading?

I believe the same may happen with groups of photos.

Thanks for persevering! We can lay them out on a a page to show them in the order we'd like. If you can upload one set of three, I'll show you how it looks to see if it's ok for you.

Regards, David

Thanks for the upload. All photos are connected with the Tonnochy Ballroom. We have a "Place" page for that (https://gwulo.com/node/37563), so first I linked the photos to the Place (here's how: https://gwulo.com/node/37329). That means if a reader arrives at the photo, they have a way to get to the Place's page.

Then I added a comment to the Tonnochy Ballroom page and added the photos in the right order, so it looks like this https://gwulo.com/comment/44101#comment-44101 (Here's how to add a photo to the text: https://gwulo.com/node/1929).

Dear David

I am glad to see that you have created a good web site for gwulo stuffs and you have been maintaing this very well so far. I have also noticed that you sell books for your precious collected photos. By guessing, to order book printing you might need to place an order for at least 1000 books or more, as for the min order qty, if printed too many and salability of a new book is not good enough, cash flow is thus affected. Now you can order photo book making in China by visiting the web site of www.meipian.cn by which you can order as many photo books or few as you wish, they are now offering good discounts that you might not able to resist with.  You don't have to worry about the min order qty as typically required by traditional printing factory.

The www.meipian.cn is run by NanJing Blue Whale Company and being supported by the mother company of the listed company of Tencent. Up to 2017, Meipian have the 20,000,000 customers in total and I am one of those. I usually use Mepian to keep my photos for my travelling records and comments, at times, I use it to write factory quality inspection reports to record defects and my compaints to factory manager for the produced construction products.

In the Meipian photo book creation platform, you can plug in max 100 photos and multiple text fields of pages of documents - sizable enough for general purposes of publishing.

If you would try Meipian, I would expect you can publish more book titles such as ancient map of hong kong and etc since min order qty and price concern can both be compromised.

Regards.

John

Hi David,

I happened on a post about Tak Sun School (posted by Francis Tsui). I wanted to upload a photo of myself and my story to the same site, but couldn't. Instead my post came up as a separate post.

How can I repost the photo and story to the one and same thread?

Thank you.

Felix Chanduloy (Petit Prince)

Hi David,

as you have seen, I‘m currently uploading Public Works Reports. I use an OCR software that makes it quite easy converting text, only e.g. annotations and tables are difficult (and mostly don’t appear in the uploads).

Recently, I added the reports for 1890, 1891 and 1892 (please add the latter to the list of reports). For the next weeks I will convert the reports for 1893-1896 as well as for 1889. I couldn't find earlier ones that show more than the expenditures during a year on two pages - not really helpful for our purposes.

Regards, Klaus

Hi Klaus,

Thank you very much for adding these, they're useful for all sorts of searches about lots, buildings, streets, etc.

One small tip - please can you write the title in the format "1893 Public Works Department Annual Report", so that it appears in the right place in the list at https://gwulo.com/public-works-annual-reports. You can always include the literal name of the document at the start of the OCR'd text.

Regards, David

Herostratus, I use https://www.onlineocr.net/. This is a free online tool that allows you to convert  one page documents (see also my post on Gwulo).

Currently I'm working on the 1889 report (a short one). I downloaded the report as .pdf file, converted each page using Photoshop into a .jpg file and used the tool on the website to convert page by page. This report needs hardly any corrections - this makes it much easier than retyping.

Example:

New Slaughter-House, Extension of Cattle DepOt
and Depots for Pigs and Sheep.

  1. A Committee consisting of The Honourable 0. CHADWICK, the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon, and the Surveyor General, having been appointed to report on the question of a site for the proposed new Slaughter- House and Depots for Pigs and Sheep, recommended that these should be erected at Kenneclytown immediately to the -south west of the present Cattle Depot. This site has the great. advantage of concentrating the depots and slaughter-houses for cattle, sheep, and pigs in one locality. A plentiful supply of water which is essential for these purposes, can be obtained from the large nullah which traverses this site, supplemented when necessary by the Pokfularn aqueduct. These establishments should be placed under the supervision of a European Inspector, residing on the spot whose duty it will be to see that the sanitary regulations are strictly enforced. With this precaution, combined with an efficient system of drainage, and an ample supply of water, the sanitary condition of the locality will be amply guaranteed. A survey has been made of the site and the working drawings of the slaughterhouse, and pig and sheep depOts, are now in hand.

Just try it. Klaus

Klaus,

You can sign up for a free account and convert the whole PDF in one shot, skipping having to separate it into individual pages first.

I managed to get some of the tables out by rotating them into portrait mode first, then OCR, saved as a WORD doc & then C&P, e.g. for 1982

I have seen the recent war diaries.   My father Guy Walker was a prisoner of war and you were sent his diary notes by someon from the Masonic Lodge.  If you type in Guy Walker the information will come up. Please add these to your war diaries.

Thank you

Janise Rutherford

duaghter of Guy Walker

thank you so much for a wonderful magazine.  By subscribing to your website I have finally found a very long lost dear friend.  Is it possible to email her directly rather than going through your website as I am concerned information might not be protected.

many thanks

Janise Rutherford

Dear Janise,

Please send me an email (david@gwulo.com) with a link to the page with your friend's comment on, and their username on the Gwulo website, and I'll forward it to your friend for you so they can see your email address and get in touch directly.

Regards, David

Hi David,

today, I created an event for the visit of the Prince Of Wales in 1922 with many photos. But it seems to have vanished as I can't find it any more. Please help.

Regards, Klaus

Update: it re-appeared, don't know why. When I do advanced search and tick "event", its there. Is there any other easier way to find events? Possibly an additional entry in the menu on the left.

One problem remains: how to insert a photo to my comment (Addendum: HMS Renown)

P.S. It would work in this comment.

I'm not sure what caused that, but glad to see it has fixed itself.

I've added an Events section to the menu on the left.

One problem remains: how to insert a photo to my comment (Addendum: HMS Renown)?

That was my mistake in the configuration. It should be fixed now.

Regards, David

Thank you David, everything fixed. Suggest you share the information about the events menu in your next "what's new letter"

Regards, Klaus

P.S. The preview option is really helpful (know that from wikipedia)
