Definitely a Convair CV 990, as per the so called 4 “Küchemann-carrots” on the upper side of the wings. Enormous gas guzzlers, but very fast. According to swissair’s timetables of that period ( very helpful site is https://www.timetableimages.com/ttimages/sr.htm), they were used only a short period on the far east route, but at the end of the Sixties replaced by the slower but larger DC8.

On Wednesdays in Winter 1967-1968 the Swissair SR 306 Coronado would start in Zurich at 17:30 and land in Hongkong next Thursday at 19:45. Too late a time for this photo.

Better Sunday ZRH 12:30 and Honkong 13:25 the next day, on SR 304’s Coronado.

So why not this one?

The video is actually from the 1960s. Prior to the landing of the Coronado, one can see the Passenger Terminal Building (completed in 1962) and Temporary Control Tower by the side of the runway. From maps, this Control Tower disappeared around 1967. I had previously found a reference that the video was made in 1964 but I am unable to confirm the year at this juncture.

The title of the video is misleading. The video shows an instrument approach to Kai Tak via Cheung Chau, Green Island and Stonecutters (Island) followed by a final visual segment of flight. It does not show the Instrument Guidance System Approach (IGS). The IGS Approach was introduced in 1974.

Yes, definitely early to mid-1960s. A comment by beskvar on Youtube explains that at 8:48 min the Lai Chi Kok oil tanks are still there without any sign of Mei Fu Sun Chuen. The first stage of Mei Foo was finished in 1968, removal of the oil tanks and construction certainly started in about 1966. Your recollection of 1964 as the year the video was made is likely correct.

I have now the answer of a Coronado aficionado Thomas Chudalla, to whom i sent the above photo. He wrote:

"To your picture from Hong Kong: This must have been taken somewhere between February 1962 and August 1964. As can be seen in the picture, the Exhaust / exhaust trims of the engines were not yet modified. On the occasion of the Speed Improvement Program, Swissair had successively All CV-990 with new exhaust / exhaust trims to reduce the external air resistance modified until August 1964.

Otherwise, flights to Hong Kong were converted from the CV-990 to the DC-8 in August 1969."

Thanks Jan and Thomas for further information of the Coronado and narrowing the date range between 1962 and 1964.
