This is another photo that I omitted from the original batch of William Richmond Fell's photos from his 1928-29 Hong Kong album. It shows some of the L3 submarine's crew on shore leave. I'm not sure which beach they are on. Perhaps someone can identify it. The only member of this group that I can recognize from other photos is Chief Engineer Waterson fully clothed on the far left.

Location please!
I'm sure that somebody will be able to tell me which beach this is, if only by virtue of the houses on the hills behind. I wait in hope.
I think this could be the…
I think this could be the Chung Hom Kok beach as the Snoopy Rock seems to be at the background.

Chung Hom Kok?
Thanks Paul. I'll look it up. There are quite a few houses in the background that might be recognisable. I also wondered if it might be Wei hai wei, from where there are other photos. I just don't know.
BEACH
One candidate might be what is now called Lido Beach on the Castle Peak Road about 2 miles past Tsuen Wan. We used to go there in the 1950's. There were concrete beach huts which were balloted every year. In the 1970's our company had one for a season. If your ship was in Tamar it would not be too far by launch, and only 3 miles from Stonecutters Island. In the 1920's the waters around there would have been quiet. Alternatively by road from Kowloon would only have been 30 mins.
When swimming you need to keep close to the beech as there is strong current.
Lido Beach, Castle Peak Road?
Thank you for this suggestion, palfreeman. I haven't heard of the L submarine crews using road transport, but launches would have been a possibility, I imagine, with the uniformed officers as escorts.
Re: Photo
As two men have their caps on, it is likely the men were on duty and came with their submarine. Probably a rest break. From photos that we have seen, Tolo Harbour, Plover Cove, Mirs Bay and Bias Bay have been mentioned. Difficult to say the location.
Tolo Harbour, Plover Cove,…
Tolo Harbour, Plover Cove, Mirs Bay are not really submarine waters (too shallow) and Bias Bay was/is in China. They are also a long way from Tamar. If you plan on spending time on this project I would suggest beaches around HK Island, Castle peak. A key I think is that the beach seems quite deep, many beaches in HK are a relatively narrow strip of sand.
It might be worth to compare an old picture of SouthBay or Sheko with the photo; both have a lot of sand and both have a road just back up from the beach (not that I have been to Sheko for probably half a century ! )
