That's a good view. Do you know the name of the building facing us in the distance, with a light-coloured sign along the top of the building? I think I've seen it described as a famous restaurant of the time?
It is the red light district of Shek Tong Tsui. The hotel with the light coloured sign is the Luen Shing Hotel at the junction of South Lane and Hill Road. It operated as a hotel-cum-restaurant. See here Other buildings in the vicinity served a similar purpose.
This photo appears to have been taken from the end of Hill Road towards Hill Road near the junction between Hill Road and Des Voeux Road, next to the Shik Tong Tsui tram terminal. Hill Road connects PokFuLam Road at the HKU to Queen’s Road West/Des Veuox Road at Shik Tong Tsui. The cross street in front is Queen’s Road West.In the background, midway above, is part of PokFuLam Road. The road itself is not visible, but the light color part in the background is the retaining wall along PokFuLam Road holding up the soil for the Hong Kong Water Department (WD) filter bed area next to HKU. The western-style bungalow (the WD staff’s quarter) is clearly visible in the photo. The hillside behind is Hill Above Belcher’s and is now called Lung Fu Shan.
