Wanchai waterfront in 1996

Tue, 01/09/2024 - 20:28

This photo shows the view to the east from a point, most likely on a footbridge, near the second Wanchai Ferry Pier in October 1996.  It could be May or October. The building on the left is the Wanchai Ferry building, and the red structures on the left are a covered walkway to the ferry. The concrete building in the centre of the photo is probably a water treatment building. Behind that there appear to be blocks at Sugar Street and Oil Street. In the distance there is the elevated roadway from Causeway Bay leading to Taikoo. The hillside on the left of the photo showing signs of quarrying is in the area on the Kowloon side beyond Kwun Tong.  Note the blue-and-cream bus of the now defunct China Motor Bus Company.   The road is now known as Convention Avenue.  According to helpful comments which I am grateful to receive,  the road was previously known as Hung Hing Road.

Hi There,

As far as I could recall, that road next to the previous Wan Chai Pier at the water front should be Hung Hing Road.

Hi There,

A bit more information about Convention Avenue.  Back in the 1990's, the new wing of Convention and Exhibition Centre was on an artificial island.  What's under the inter-connecting passage way between the two was still the sea.  That was also a narrow two lane street leading to the loading dock of the old wing.

I couldn't recall when it was filled up.  Probably a bit before 2000.

ps  I used to work there but got posted elsewhere in 1999.
