When she arrived at Southampton 9 November 1945 on the Highland Monarch with many other returnees from Hong Kong, her name was shown as Ruth E Ashton HILL age 40 in the passenger list. Her occupation was lecturer Colonial Office and her address in the UK was 130 Plumstead Road Norwich Norfolk UK

I checked the Norwich address on the 1939 census and found a family named Audsley living there so then looked for Ruth E Audsley and found her in 1937 arriving in Plymouth from Trinidad. She was Ruth Emily Audsley age 31, address in the UK Grassmere  Plumstead Road Norwich, occupation lecturer, place of last permanent residence Trinidad. Country of future permanent residence Foreign Countries. She travelled to Trinidad in 1934 age 21 lecturer.

However the only birth of a Ruth Emily Audsley in the UK civil index  was registered  in Wakefeld Yorkshire 1895

They all look to be the same lady, but her age certainly jumps about!

There are a couple of results for "Audsley" at HKGRO:

  1. Civil Establishments of Hongkong for the Year 1938: Refers to page J103, which shows her as a Mistress in the Education Department. Her first appointment was Dec 1st 1937, so that's likely when she first arrived in HK.
  2. HK Govt Gazette, 4 Feb 1938: No.85, Miss Ruth Emily Audsley to be an Assistant Mistress (Kindergarten), Education Department, with effect from 3rd February, 1938.
