Thank you moddsey.  The President Liner Wilson,  which took me to San Francisco in 1964, docked at this spot.   Although four decades after this photo, from the starboard side the view was similar: the ferry, clock tower, previous Star House, deck planks, tracks and this elevated platform.  And something more special ...
Before we left, the ship's staff let off streamers for the people below to catch.  I picked up one streamer from the railing and saw a girl below holding the other end.  She was about at the spot on this (foreground) side of the 4-wheel cart.  Her company might have already returned to their cabin.  By this time  my classmates have left.  She was about my age, and we both held the streamer with care for fear of breaking it, and periodically, we looked at each other.  She was the last person I held onto before leaving Hong Kong.  This old man never forgets, and wonders where she is now.  Thank you for reading my memories.

Dear Peter, there must have been lots of gems like this story on the Wharf.  I love'd your reminisce.

James Cameron should have used it in his Titanic film as the missing evidence of a romance but for time. A key piece not included in the latest film.

There was a romance between D'Caprio's Jack and Winslet's Rose DeWitt but nothing like the slow burning embers you suggest in you story.
