Peak Mansions & Mount Kellett, c.1950

A photo of Peak Mansions and Mount Kellett in the early Fifties. The Peak Cafe is visible in the foreground, and the ruins of the old Peak Hotel (which stopped operating in about 1936) can be seen on the left. Note that the top of Mount Kellett is intact; the top was removed later on when a reservoir (I think?) was built there.

The top of Mount Kellet was cut off in about 1959/1960 so that a beacon could be installed to guide arcraft to Kaitak airport with its recently built new runway stretching out towards Lyemun.  I lived in the adjacent Peak Pavilions at the time and witnessed the work taking place.

In the 1980s, I wondered what used to be on the terrace-like structure next to the car park near the Peak Cafe. How come nothing was built on the site between the 1930s and the 1990s??
